A bit of good news: we received bicycles thanks to Rotary Club Paramaribo Central in collaboration with Rotary Oosterhout
Never before in the past 10 years have you gone so long without receiving a YES newsletter. The truth is that we as a team have struggled dealing with the current crisis. I couldn't bring myself to send you a message every month saying that we were hoping again and that, once again, there was no improvement in the situation.
The COVID-19 misery and the deep economic crisis in Suriname have been nothing short of devastating. Code black in hospitals and the many deaths in a small community like ours make life a harsh reality. Schools were closed and a ban on gatherings was in place for months. It was a time of sadness and frustration for YES because we couldn't see our young people, who needed us even more now, and we couldn't carry out our projects.
Bicycles, phones, clothing, and food packages
The mission of YES is the empowerment of youth in Suriname, and in these times, we as an organization must also choose to offer material support.
We have continued to support a number of young people and their families with monthly food packages (inflation in Suriname is now over 60%!). We will continue to do this on a small scale for as long as necessary.
We held a phone collection in the Netherlands and were able to help many young people out of their isolation!
Over 100 kilos of clothing were collected. Beautiful shoes and clothes, that brought a lot of joy to families and children’s homes.
Rotary Club Paramaribo Central, in collaboration with Rotary Oosterhout, had a container with bicycles shipped to Suriname. YES was able to share in the joy. We gave the bicycles to young people who we knew would benefit greatly from having a bicycle for their future. In these times, not everyone in Suriname can afford to pay for the bus to school.
A thousand thanks to all the people in the Netherlands and to the Rotary Clubs for working with us to make it possible to contribute in this way to the well-being of our youth.
Pure joy
For the past two weeks, our hearts have been leaping with joy and our blood has been flowing faster... because our Empowerment training courses have finally started again! More than 100 powerful young people are participating in our projects. They are open, eager to learn, and 100% committed to their personal growth. For us, there is nothing more beautiful than being able to work with such young people, truly!
YES WE CAN!
A warm brasa (hug) from Suriname,
